Umm One Of Everything Please?

Australian FirefighterOkay so I had other intentions but look where I wound up…I know ladies, wipe that drool from the sides of your mouth because I lay claim to this smoking fireman! I had originally set out to look for a picture of a calendar to use as the image in this post but then I stumbled upon the Australian Firefighter Calendar and…well got a little distracted from my main intention. These guys are not only smoking hot but they donate all the money raised from calendar sales to the local children’s burn hospital! Awesome job guys and…well for lack of a better phrase, YUM.

My original intention; however, was to update you on my GRE studies. With 9 days and 22 hours left I’m starting to  get a little anxious…can we say understatement? I have so far taken four practice tests, although since the first was just to get the feel of the thing it really shouldn’t count but you can find the results below:

Quantitative (Math)
480 500
620 460
410 620
510 600

If only I could combine that 620 quantitative with 620 verbal I’d feel a lot better about it all. So far there has been quite a lot of variation in my scoring which I am certain is due to the variation in questions asked and methods tested. I have also noticed that I do particularly well in verbal sections with science or nature related reading comprehension paragraphs as opposed to politically focused paragraphs – fingers crossed I get the prior on test day!

I need to achieve at least a 500 minimum (out of 800) on each section to stand a chance in getting accepted to grad school, or so I hear but I am hoping for at least one section to be significantly above that. The GRE test is computer administered only, for those who don’t know, and it self adjusts to your level of comprehension which I am hoping will turn out in my favor on test day. I am well aware of the fact that people out there score way above the scores I am receiving and that is great for them but for me this is a struggle (but I’ll be damned if I’m giving up!). I am not, nor have I ever been a good test taker particularly when it comes to standardized tests; however, I’m hoping my big smile and chirpy nature combined with great letters of recommendation and research experience will help to counteract any lack in GRE scores. I can’t help but wish that these admission committees could see how badly I want this, how much I want to be at their schools and how much I am prepared to work to get there because if they could I am certain that they’d give me a shot!
