Updated GRE Testing Scores

GRE TestingI have resolved to take a test a day until GRE time (9 days 19 hours and 50 minutes from now.) So far I have done well this week, doing a test a day without fail; however, my scores have been a little varied. I had been using the Kaplan Premier program with DVD and online support (hah, it comes with 6 mths of online access and if you intend to study for longer than that or receive the book early as a gift like I did, then you’re going to have to raise hell to get your online access time extended), but yesterday I downloaded the ETS GRE Powerprep software to determine if there was a real difference between scoring on the two simulated tests. Below is the table of scoring that you’ve see before with my two ETS scores added in:

Quantitative (Math)
Verbal
480 500
620 460
410 620
510 600
610 (ETS) 570 (ETS)
620 (ETS) 560 (ETS)

With slight exception my math seems to be inclining which is definitely a good thing and certainly attributable to practice and the ability to recognize “trick questions” and short cuts to answers. My verbal score, however, is heavily dependant upon which vocabulary words I am presented with. Not to “toot my own horn” but I am skilled when it comes to vocabulary and the English language (with the exception of grammar usage), and have reviewed over 500 words specifically recommended for the GRE…so why is it that I rarely if ever get any of those words on the practice test?

Hey Colette! The GRE is the “SAT” of graduate school. Graduate school programs use your GRE scores as an assessment of your abilities and the better you do the more schools want to add you to their student body. Of course there are more factors taken in to consideration, letters of recommendation, college GPA and such but the GRE is a biggie!
