I have always been a fairly proficient writer when it comes to academics and yet as I sit down to tackle my Statement of Purpose for my graduate school applications this morning my brain is simply not cooperating. While each school determines what it wants to receive in your statement of purpose there is a general bare bones framework that must be set and will remain fairly consistent for each statement. I have six statements to write and I am still swimming circles around the first paragraph of the first statement. The trouble is that I have so much to say and only a page and a half DOUBLE SPACED to say it.
I read an article about how Twitter was helping students become more concise with their academic work, I now wish I had spent more time tweeting.
I am told that it is best to start your statement with something grabbing, something that sets you apart from the others, this is where I am having issue. How do I know what will grab your attention? I have lived a fairly meager and uneventful life when it all comes down to it and yet I don’t feel that it has been so uneventful that I should have nothing to write.
After four false starts I believe I have the first two sentences of the bare bones statement of purpose…is it good enough to get me in to grad school? I have a feeling it’ll need a few more sentences before I can judge that!

Is that attention grabbing enough? Yeah…. maybe a little over the top.
You’ll figure out what works for you and what feels most natural. It’s hard to write about ourselves and our ‘purpose’, especially in a page and a half double spaced!
I like it but me thinks it might not work so well for board reviewers without the humor bone in their body lol
for me its hard to put myself on paper and to have to write a diff. statement of purpose is too much. glad to see youre mastering it
