A Day In The Life

tiredYesterday was a very rough day on us all. Being unemployed for so long has left dad with a huge dent in his self esteem and consequently there are sometimes very bad days and yesterday was one of them. The depression of feeling as though he has failed us all left him wanting nothing more than to be alone and unfortunately with six people in the house that is an impossibility for the most part. Dad took a walk alone which worried us all and upset mom. Following this Buzz spent the rest of the day in the dining room working and avoiding the family. Brother B’s girlfriend spent the rest of the day in their room stressed out by the tension of the family dynamics and brother B and I did what we could to hold the family together. By the time bedtime rolled around I was exhausted and more than ready for sleep. Rolling over in bed I saw a look on Buzz’s face that I knew meant that there would be more trouble come morning but to be honest I was far too exhausted to deal with it and asking him once what was wrong without a response I rolled back over and went to sleep.

Come this morning I had promised brother B and his girlfriend that we would go to a local mall to get out of the house (and return the sweater that Buzz purchased for me for Christmas which didn’t mesh with my ‘style’) and so I was up and glad for the escape. Buzz, however, was still broody. Asking him what it was again I found out that he is stressed out not only by my family but by staying here “so long” and having his routine upset. I admit that I was ticked, I understood, but I was definitely ticked because it’s not as though my parents live close to our home nor do we see them often. I told Buzz he had the option to leave me here and go back home until he could come back for me. He declined telling me he didn’t want to “be rude”.  Biting my tongue I prepared for our outing to the mall.

Ignoring the continued brooding the rest of the day went rather well. Brother B’s girlfriend and I had a great time shopping while brother B and Buzz went to more “manly” stores. I returned my sweater and came away with a t-shirt and pair of jeans from Hollister for $29 total! I also picked up a button up shirt and vintage t-shirt from Charlotte Russe for a total of $16 and a long sleeve t-shirt and a sweater from Target for $15! You know me, I love a great deal so I was absolutely thrilled with my new grabs from the mall. Slowly but surely and definitely thriftily, I am building up my grad school wardrobe with a few casual pieces and more not so casual pieces to impress my professionalism upon grad school entrance committees.

The day was long but I managed to get some good deals and get away from the stress of holding together my family and away from the burden of a brooding significant other. Combined with the worry of impending graduate school decisions it is no wonder my dad insists that I sleep in tomorrow, apparently I am the color of a ghost and both he and my mom are worried about me. To tell the truth I’m a little worried about me too, one more mood swing, situation to fix or family feud to administer a Band-aid to and I might just leave them all and move to a small shack by the sea.
