A Visit To The MRI Clinic

Today Mum had her second MRI as a part of her “initiation” in to her new neurologists practice. With every move my parents make, my mum must find a new neurologist to help her to keep tabs on her multiple sclerosis and to prescribe her the medications that make life with MS bearable. A couple of weeks ago she had her brain MRI completed and this morning I took her in for the neck and upper spine MRI. Next comes the lower back MRI. With multiple sclerosis the body attacks the myelin sheathes that coat nerves and one of the things that happens during this process is that lesions are formed on various areas of the central nervous system including the brain and spinal cord. Depending on the area of the brain or spinal cord that lesions appear, symptoms can vary wildly. MRI’s in MS patients can also reveal previous scars from lesions that were not known before although generally lesions on such vital parts of the body make themselves known through symptoms. Mum seems to be doing relatively well on her current cocktail of drugs which includes Copaxone – or Copax One the alien drug as we call it, energy producing drugs that are intended to help drug addicts wean themselves off *illegal street drug here*, an anti-depressant and a drug intended for individuals with Parkinson’s to help with the tremors that sometimes come with the territory of MS. Most of her days are good days, on occasion there is a bad day where she wants to just rest but she’s a trooper and so far she is kicking MS’s ass!
