More Christmas Memories

carolers_1These past few days I have been a-caroling as I’ve been working here at my desk and as I’ve sat here singing away I’ve remembered some treasured memories of Christmasses past. It’s funny the memories that songs can evoke.

I live quite far from my siblings now and yet Christmas reminds me, every year, of them. My younger brothers live in Missouri and my sister lives in Prague and yet when I hear the song “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” I laugh to myself remembering how we would sing it like ‘Super Grover’ from Sesame Street. We always made sure to over-pronounce the WISH with lots of extra force behind that W and it never failed to make us cry with laughter. In fact the same goes for the “bring us some figgy pudding”  line as well. As children it was hysterical cackling, belly holding tears streaming down our faces laughter; as an adult it is a nostalgic titter.

My siblings are not the only ones who make their appearance in my Christmas Caroling memories; however, because I cannot hear the “Twelve Days of Christmas” without snickering at the thought of my mom trying to hold that “fiiiiivvvvveeeeeeeeee goooollllllldddddddddennnnnnn riiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggsss” everytime. It is not even so much the fact that she can’t carry a tune – who am I to judge, but more the fact that whenever she can’t remember any of the other days of Christmas they also become “five golden rings”.

I love my family. We have not always seen eye to eye and we are certainly as far from the perfect family but that’s fine by me. My family is mine and I’ll take them, warts and all.

Oh this brought tears of happiness to my eyes, because I have that same nostalgia in my life with Super Grover and Wish you a Merry Christmas! 🙂

Isn’t it funny how such a little character can have such a huge impact on our lives that years later we remember with such fondness!
