When I was contacted by My Blog Spark and asked if I would like to receive a $25 gift card courtesy of BJ’s Warehouse and General Mills to review BJ’s warehouse I was thrilled, firstly because it’s my first official review job and second, because we love to shop the big warehouse clubs. While we are a Sam’s Club household for the most part (it simply comes down to them carrying Quilted Northern toilet paper) we had at one point been a BJ’s household and I was excited at the chance to go back and take a look around.
Our local BJ’s club is right next to our mailbox at the UPS store (you can locate your closest club here) so it’s extremely convenient for us to drop by whenever we want to check out the goods and pick up some snacks, which is one thing that BJ’s never has a lack of! Another awesome bonus to BJ’s is that they are currently giving away a FREE 60-day trial membership until the end of the year so if you’ve been eyeing a BJ’s membership now is the time to give it a free trial! If you know me I love bargains and what better bargain than free?
I was exceptionally eager to see what new snacks they were carrying at BJ’s since my last trip because as a household that is always on the go whether it’s research work, business work or simply getting a work out in, we often have to settle for ‘snacks’ until we can meet up at the end of the day for a meal together. I had been notified that BJ’s was now carrying :
- Nature Valley Nut Clusters – 100% Natural, bite-sized clusters with granola, nuts and a touch of honey – and a resealable package which makes it great for sharing
- Progresso High-Fiber Soups – This 6-pack of soup is a great way to get your fiber with the great taste you know and love from Progresso
- Green Giant Complete Skillet Meal – A convenient and great tasting solution for a quick and delicious dinner for the family
- Pillsbury “Big Deluxe” Chocolate Chip Tub – Perfect for entertaining or as an everyday treat
All of which are things which appeal to us as an on the go household…okay so Buzz will eat the middle two as snacks and the first and last are most certainly more in my court!
As soon as we began to browse around the store I was drawn in by the table at the front stacked with fresh cakes and pastries although Buzz seemed more excited about the huge cigarettes sign, sigh, some things never change! The prices on the pastries and cakes were all amazing compared to the quick pastries we grab from our grocery store (which incidentally NEVER look this great).
Looking around our BJ’s a little more I was amazed at the huge array of fresh meats which all looked FRESH. I didn’t have to weed through browning meats or awful meats with that pearlescent sheen on them to find a good piece of steak and they most definitely have meat packaged to cater to larger families or holiday get togethers. With seven people at our home over the holidays we have to think ahead and plan meals accordingly and with the prices at BJ’s it’s a lot easier to do that.
Somewhere during our trip I lost Buzz and when I found him he was staring glassy eyed at the refrigerator full of juices. Lately he’s been on something of a health kick and has been drinking *gag* carrot juice. I managed to drag him away with one bottle of carrot juice (at a very reasonable price I might add).
Overall I was particularly impressed with the wide selection of products and services offered by our BJ’s, much like our favorite Sam’s club they carry car tires, cigarettes, clothing, mattresses and of course food. All of these things come at a bulk discount and are surprisingly fresh and affordable even for a family of two living on a budget for one. In the end we managed to get out of the door with just the toilet paper we had agreed upon purchasing with our $25 gift card because…well, needs must, and one bottle of carrot juice which I entirely expected to put the toilet paper to use later that afternoon.
I was pleasantly surprised with the changes I noticed in our local BJ’s, it used to be dingy and dirty and the selection was minimal but on our latest trip things seem to have picked up quite a bit. I noticed more customers than before, more selection of big name products and it was definitely cleaner than the last time we had visited a little over a year ago.
-A wider selection of products available than BJ’s carried a year ago.
-Affordable prices for bulk purchases.
-Good quality meats and baked goods.
-The price of membership is higher than Sam’s ($45 vs $40 for the lowest tier) and offers less perks than Sam’s Club for the membership fee.
-Only 180 locations in 15 states vs Sam’s 605 locations in 48 states.
