Harry Connick Jr ‘Your Songs’ *Review*

harryAs you may have guessed by now, I absolutely LOVE entering contests because not only do they give me a chance to review new products and share my opinion with you guys but once in a while they give me the chance to save a few pennies on Christmas gifts! A couple of weeks ago I entered one such contest. Beeb over at Contest Corner was giving away a copy of Harry Connick Jr’s newest CD ‘Your Songs’.  Now I already have this CD and absolutely love it but I have been stressing over what to get my dad for Christmas this year and when I saw this contest I knew that this would also be the perfect gift for my dad.

It used to be that I loved rebellious music, things that made my parents clutch their ears and beg for a reprieve but as I aged I mellowed out considerably and now you will find me listening to Michael Buble, smooth jazz, old blues and Harry Connick Jr. In short, I adopted my fathers taste (okay we both also have a streak of classic rock in us too) in music. Needless to say that I won the CD from Contest Corner and it arrived this weekend! So why did I decide to share it with you? Because I absolutely LOVE this CD! I have heard quite a few other blogs say how disappointed they were with the songs on this one because they were all covers but I thought they were perfect and Harry’s voice along with them!

Here is the track listing for ‘Your Songs’

All The Way (Frank Sinatra)
Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel)
Can’t Help Falling In Love With You (Elvis Presley)
And I Love Her (The Beatles)
(They Long To Be) Close To You (The Carpenters)
Besame Mucho
The Way You Look Tonight
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (Roberta Flack)
Your Song (Elton John)
Some Enchanted Evening
And I Love You So (Don McLean)
Who Can I Turn To? (Tony Bennett)
Smile (Charlie Chaplin)
Mona Lisa (Nat King Cole)

My favorite song from the CD is “And I Love Her”, the cool calm Spanish beat that begins the song not only gets my hips swaying but it also brings back memories of walking a stone paved square in Spain. A square that was covered with small market stalls selling knick-knacks in the moonlight, a square with a fountain in the center and as we walked with marshmallow sticks in hand my sister and I tugged my parents to the stalls to investigate miniature glass animals created with such care that I dared not touch them. This is what I love the most about Harry Connick Jr. his voice has the ability to quite literally transport you to another place and time with such intricate detail that you can almost taste the air.

If you are a true Harry Connick Jr fan I think that you will appreciate this album. I certainly can’t say that you will love each and every song – particularly if you are not a fan of  ‘covers’ but if you can appreciate that smooth rhythmic voice of New Orleans you won’t miss a thing with this one.

I would like to thank Beeb at  Contest Corner for running such a great contest and for the One 2 One Network for providing Harry Connick Jr’s newest CD as a prize!

I am obligated to tell you that I received no compensation for this review and that the opinions expressed are my own, others opinions and experiences may differ.
