A Healthy Hobby

YogaI will let you in on one of my dirty little secrets – I didn’t learn how to read by myself until I was eight years old. I hated reading with a passion. My first reading lesson as a child went something like – Mum gives me book, I throw book, Mum tries again, I throw book further and head straight to the TV. In short, it was a disaster. While I eventually did learn to read I always had difficulty keeping up with required readings because it took me so long to get through a page. Now, in my adulthood I find reading to be an asylum. I can curl up in bed with a book and ignore the world, ignore my life, my troubles and my everything for a while and sink in to a good book.

During this near two month sabbatical of mine down here in Florida I have already worked my way through Life Of Pi

I am also on my way to finishing “Eat, Pray, Love” as well. A book that I absolutely adore and would read ten times over because it is so completely my life in a nutshell. It is me. I dare you to read it and not take something away from it, something bigger than you, something so amazing that you stay up until 3am just to get through another third of the book…or perhaps not that late if you’re a better reader than I.

Dear Amy: Fantastic article! You are living proof just how important and fun reading can be. I have been a Literacy tutor and trainer for adults, kids and special needs folks for years and your story brought a tear to my eye and hope to my heart.
Enjoy Florida and keep on turning those pages!! Enjoy your break and keep up the great work!
